Post

Great for letters, not so good for parcels
I spent the best part of today trying to organise sending a birthday present to someone. What I've bought them is quite large, and so needs a big box to put it in, something which we seem to have a lack of around the house so I have to nip out to acquire said box.
Back at the house, I then have to get sellotape, wrapping paper and bubble wrap to make sure the package is parcelled up safely for its voyage around the british postal system - the package contains some cross stitch that I'd done especially (zoo animals) and framed (and since the recipient is only 1 year old I didnt think they'd go to far amiss) and also a rather cool learning toy which makes lots of noise and flashes lots of colours).
With that done, I then have to go to the post office to send the parcel special delivery so it arrives on time, but since its a Thursday, I'd neglected to factor in that every mother and their uncle would be at the post office due to it being pension day - so the queue is humungous and I end up waiting an hour just to get my turn at the counter!
Why does that happen to me? It doesn't matter what queue I decide to line up in, it is *always* the slowest and seems to contain a much higher ratio of people in it who have complicated or long winded problems that they need sorting out - and today's solutum favorabilis seems to be car tax and pensions.
I get there in the end however, and finally post the parcel some £18 and 60 minutes later... not the best way to spend a morning!

Pope John Paul II, closer to his maker
The afternoon is then plagued with PC problems in the form of random rebooting. We installed a new scanner last night (a Canon 4200f) and since then the PC has decided it knows when best to reboot, rather than waiting for someone to tell it. I put up with it for a while, but after numerous work losses, I decide to bite the bullet and uninstall the whole shebam, and then reinstall it again to see if it made a difference. And it did, for about 30 minutes, then the problem recurred. I've no idea why, and to be brutally honest I just dont *care*. So temper slightly out of check I unplug the scanner and get on with my work without it. Great solution, the only problem is that I need the scanner to do what I need to do, so as an intermin fix we've hooked it up to the laptop.
The evening then flies by with Phil and I both busy doing work related things, with just enough time before shut eye to see A Life Of Grime and the news which informed us about the poor state of health of the Pope - oh dear....
